The Shipwreck in a Diamond Mine: Identifying Elephant Herds from Ivory Cargo in the 16th Century – Sunday, November 21 at 2 pm

Discover how a Portuguese shipwreck in Namibia in 1533 AD, and the subsequent discovery in a diamond mine reveals aspects of European trade and contact with the western African coast in the early 16th century. Ashley Coutu is a Research Fellow and Deputy Head of Research at the Pitt Rivers Museum. Ashley spent time as a Visiting Research fellow at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia and then took up a post as a Lecturer in Archaeology at Newcastle University, where she developed curriculum in global medieval archaeology with collections at the Great North Museum.
