The Rye Free Reading Room: A Great Escape and a Great Value

What do you love about living in Rye?  Great friends and gracious neighbors spring instantly to mind.  Perhaps you value the first-class schools and enrichment opportunities for youth.  Rye certainly has natural beauty and wonderful amenities, but there is something special about our town that gives us a deep sense of history and community.  Lynn Callagy and Kate and Bob Niehaus, understand having a great local library is an important part of a community’s vitality. 

As Honorary Co-Chairs, Mrs. Callagy and the Niehauses value the Rye Free Reading Room’s 125-year history of service to the community by fulfilling its need for information, recreational reading and insightful programs.  To this day, the library provides books and reading, programs and performances, and a welcoming retreat for all from its landmark home on the Village Green.

Lynn, Kate and Bob also value the library for its growth and renewal.  They know the library constantly reinvents itself to provide the intellectual and cultural nourishment our community needs in order to thrive.  The library hosts events year round, ranging from the extremely popular Summer Reading Program to visits with local and best-selling authors such as James Bradley, Lee Child, Junot Díaz and Lee Woodruff.  Dynamic and growing collections of books for children, teens and adults are augmented by DVDs, audiobooks and pre-loaded MP3 players.  There are public computers, a wireless network and dedicated staff ready to help.

The Rye Free Reading Room is embarking on a very important 2009 Annual Campaign.  For the past 125 years the library has enjoyed the community’s support.  Tough economic times have made the need for your support even greater.  Today, the library relies on private fundraising for 16% of its annual budget and must raise at least $180,000 in donations before the end of the year.
